Our mission

Our mission is two-fold: First and foremost, we educate communities in Samburu and Maasai Mara, Kenya about the harmful effects of female genital mutilation (FGM) and forced early marriage upon young girls. Our goal is to end these human rights violations by the year 2030. Connecting Cultures. Inspiring Families. Defending Nature. Protecting Girls. Secondly, and very importantly, we provide full scholarships for girls to attend secondary boarding schools and universities. They study IT, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, Nutrition, Science, Animal Health & Production, Nursing, Community Health, Midwifery, Education, Analytical Chemistry, Supplies & Procurement Management, and Wildlife Management & Conservation. Are you aware of this? Female genital mutilation (FGM) leads to an estimated 44,320 avoidable deaths each year across 15 countries, including Kenya where we're working to end it. One young girl or woman dies every 12 minutes due to complications from FGM. FGM causes more deaths in these regions than HIV/AIDS, measles, meningitis, and starvation. Only major illnesses like malaria, respiratory infections, and enteric (stomach) infections cause more deaths. How Researchers Calculated the NumbersData Sources: Researchers studied data from 1990 to 2020 across 15 countries where FGM is practiced. They compared death rates in areas with high FGM rates to general mortality trends. When 50% more girls in an age group undergo FGM, the 5-year mortality rate increases by 0.075 percentage points. The horrific, painful, and unnecessary procedure is often done without medical training, anesthesia, or clean tools. The main purpose is to suppress sexual desire and pleasure. Immediate and long-term physical harms lead to death through severe bleeding (hemorrhage), serious bacterial infections, severe physical shock, dangerous childbirth complications (obstructed labor) later in life. We align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) #3 - Good Health & Well-being, #4 - Quality Education, #5 - Gender Equality, and #10 - Reduced Inequalities. Impact story

Pastoralist Child Foundation (PCF) has been instrumental in reducing the rates of FGM and forced early marriage in Samburu, Kenya. We work at the grassroots level to empower girls, boys, adults, elders, village chiefs, teachers, healthcare workers, law enforcement, religious leaders, and former circumcisers to end these 2 human rights violations that adversely affect girls and women. We are considered the lead agency doing this important work, and we wish to expand our reach to more villages. Since starting our scholarship program in 2014, hundreds of girls we sponsor in secondary boarding schools and universities are achieving their rights to education and rights to equality. One of our very first sponsored students, Asha, is now on our staff as the Gender, Youth, & Social Inclusion Director! In addition, our organization supports and mentors women's self-help groups. The women earn money to support their families and send more girls to school.
