Our mission is to promote safer homes and stronger communities through education, prevention, and compassionate support. We provide evidence-based training on safe firearm storage, equip parents and caregivers with tools to talk with children and other families about firearms in the home, support youth impacted by secondary trauma, and offer comprehensive childcare and babysitting education for community members of all ages. Through open dialogue, practical skills, and a commitment to child safety, we empower families and communities to protect children, reduce preventable harm, and build a culture of responsibility and care.
Impact story
L.I.F.E. has graduated 33 students from its free eight-week childcare and babysitter course at the Ypsilanti Township Rec Center. Participants earn CPR and First Aid certification through Trinity Health, learn to recognize abuse and safety concerns with the Washtenaw County Area Council for Children, and cover safe car seat use with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. The course also covers child development, caring for disabled children, basic American Sign Language, resume building, and job readiness. Every graduate leaves with a first aid kit, a "magic babysitter bag" of childcare supplies, and the tools to talk with families about safe firearm storage. The fifth cohort begins September 12. L.I.F.E. was founded after co-founder Denise Wieck's son Guy survived a gunshot wound at seventeen. Donations now go toward launching their Youth Empowerment and Healing program, which will provide trauma-informed support to young people in Washtenaw County who have witnessed violence.
